DIY Mascara with 2 Ingredients

The other day I was talking to my friend Johnna telling her how I couldn’t find any of my make-up since we moved months ago and complaining about the price of mascara here in New Zealand. Think Cover Girl for $30.
Because she is a fabulous friend and a generous person, she offered to send me some. Then she reminded me I had a frugal blog and I should have a go at making my own. Duh.
I poked around and found you can make batches of mascara with just two ingredients. Since it has no preservatives, you should use it quickly, but since I wear make-up MAYBE once a quarter, that works for me. I’m happy to make up single applications as required.
Did you know you are supposed to throw your mascara away every 6 months to prevent bacterial nasties setting up house? I don’t know about you, but even in my higher make-up use days, I’ve never gone through an entire mascara in 6 months.
So what goes in this make-up wonder? Aloe Vera gel and mica-or some mineral make-up eye-shadow if you have some hanging about. I had to order off for my mica but at $3.50 for 15 grams, it is a whole lot cheaper than a mascara. I got it in today and it only takes a teeny tiny bit of the mica powder mixed with a minuscule bit of aloe vera gel. The 15 grams of mica is going to last me a LONG time. Probably years.

How safe this is depends on your ingredients. Use at your own risk. But I’m LOVING it. And assuming you choose your ingredients wisely, this should be very gentle.
You can use an old mascara applicator you’ve sterilised to apply, but as I’ve lost all my make-up, I used a finger tip. The result is noticeable, but subtle. We aren’t talking about super-duper, lash-plumping, length defying yadda-yadda here, just my lashes darkened to the tips. Perfect for me.
I picked up my black mica along with some brown for instant eye-shadow at an on-line shop in NZ that has now become SoapCraft. Non-Kiwi readers should be able to procure some at a local to you soap and cosmetic supply store, either on-line or brick and mortar.
